The Last Prom, 1985

Visually inspired by the famed exhibition hall, The Crystal Palace, in London’s Hyde Park. The Last Prom is a gorgeous jewel box displaying a wealth of human interactions that run the gamut in miniature. The scene is a familiar environment, a large semi formal social gathering, a prom of sorts, but for an older generation. There’s lots of action portrayed, but upon closer inspection it is the range of pathos that is being exhibited here. This piece is a display of vulnerabilities under glass. Love, joy, loneliness, indulgence, we see glimpses of it all. Materials employed in the creation of The Last Prom hold messaging: glass walls, a floor built of eggshells, (a meticulous and delicate inlay technique) support the sense of an underlying vulnerability and fragility—the prom goers are literally dancing on eggshells.
