THE SKETCHBOOKS

Sketching was fundamental to Beck’s process. It was a way for him to explore multiple ideas, think through project details, experiment with various techniques, and also to draw for the sake of drawing. As an artist thought of primarily as a sculptor, his two-dimensional work could be overlooked. The pages of his many sketchbooks reveal the lyricism and skill of hand evident in his sculptural work also extended to the page. He kept sketchbooks over the course of his career which taken as a whole display the shifts and development of his work over time. Below are a selection of images across the years.
